Jennie Kantyka, Rosie Campbell-Blair, Ollie Hatcher and Tessa Catchpole climbed Kilimanjaro in October 2011. Starting from a casual dinner-party conversation between sisters-in-law Jennie and Rosie, the idea quickly became a definite plan. As we are keen walkers and outdoors enthusiasts we wanted to do it for our own sense of achievement - and while we were still young and fit fifty-something’s! We decided on a small girls-only group and friends Ollie and Tessa were quick to join us.
Our trip was entirely self-funded but we used the opportunity to try and raise some funds for good causes. It didn't take us long to agree on 3 very different but important charities and we are delighted to be able to support Forever Angels Baby Home. We particularly wanted to support a local Tanzanian charity and as Ollie's niece had spent some time as a volunteer at Forever Angels we knew of the fantastic work going on there.
For our climb we chose the longer Lemosho route as not only is it one of most scenic routes but it also allows more acclimatization time.

The walk took us through fantastic scenery from rainforest to high alpine moorland and we enjoyed every day, even the camping in sub-zero temperatures! We all experienced some degree of altitude sickness and despite our preparation and high fitness levels the last few hours were a real test of stamina. But with the support and encouragement of our 2 excellent African Walking company guides we reached the summit, Uhuru Peak, at 8am on Sunday 9th October.
Tears of jubilation and relief quickly gave way to smiles and cheers as we posed for photos on the roof of Africa.

Thank you SO much to these amazingly fit and generous ladies for their hard work, determination and kind support.
